Anna Engelhardt – German handbag brand with Italian style.
Ad| Anna Engelhardt and I both lived in Florence and learned the leather craft there. Since 2017, she has an eponymous handbag brand for which she designs and crafts her own bags.
Anna, how does your time in Florence and experience of the Italian culture influence your bag designs?
The Italian culture, or more precisely the people I worked with in Italy, have been highly influential to my designs and style of working. Most notably, it has changed my approach to designing new products, because when you draw and make a product, every seam must be carefully considered.
That’s why my bags are very puristic, reduced to the bare essentials. Also, I remember the manufacturing techniques that I learned in Italy.
The culture in Italy highly appreciates the crafting process. This is something I would also like to have in Germany. For now, I try to hold on to the Italian approach at my label and tune my designs to represent an alternative to fast-paced fashion.
What do you love most about crafting leather bags?
Starting with a sketch and holding the finished model in your hands after a few days is probably the best part of my job.
Please tell us more about your current handbag brand and its collection.
Less than a year ago, I set up my own studio and worked on my first small collection. Currently, I make different models on request, in three colours of Italian calf leather, which I get from Florence.
From cutting to the finished model, everything is created in my small workshop. My bags characterise a clear, puristic design.
The bracelet bag EMMI is the bestseller of my models and has a special recognition value through the loop detail.
The unique thing about my products is that traditional craftsmanship is combined with puristic design – a counterpoint to fast-paced fashion.
Where does your handbag brand Anna Engelhardt go in the future?
I would like to add more models to the collection and in the future, work on other accessories, such as purses or spectacle cases matching a bag.
Where are your handbags available?
My handbags can be ordered on my website, but I also accept orders via Instagram. Furthermore, I’m currently in talks with various retailers.
