Ad| Ruigrok van der Werven was founded in 2016 by Denise Ruigrok van der Werven. After graduating in „Allround Styling“, she initially worked as a freelance fashion stylist but decided soon to build her own handbag brand and to design crossbody bags and other stylish handbags.
Denise, what does it mean to you to follow your dream of creating your own handbags?
My work doesn’t feel like work. Every day is a surprise of what I’m going to do. It is a very special feeling when you draw a bag and your design arrives in the office from the factory in Italy. I’m very lucky they can create precisely what I have in mind.
Where does the inspiration for your collection come from?
Most of the time, my inspiration comes from my own sketches; I draw a lot and when I see that something works, I draw it on the computer. But I also visit a lot of museums and a walk through the city is very inspiring as well!
Please tell us more about the crossbody bags and the other handbags you have in your collection.
The crossbody bag in the new collection is something that was missing in the past; it is highly functional and at the same time you can wear it with EVERYTHING. If your look is casual, it can bring your outfit to a higher level and when you are going to a party, the fresh colours it comes in, make it look very chic with a black dress for example. The pink one is very soft and the suède material sets it apart.
The Knot Handle is the best seller of my brand; also my trademark. You don’t need to see the logo to know that it is a Ruigrok van der Werven bag. This bag comes in four colourways and in this collection, I choose black for the handles. Because the contrast to the colour of the bag makes it very luxurious.
The Bucket Plus is the bigger version of the Bucket Bag from my previous collection, without a shoulder strap. This bag is so functional with its two inside zipper pockets and a lot of space for daily use. The bags are tamponated by hand to make this croco-effect on the leather.
The Flapbag is also a new style, featuring a snake-effect leather flap. I used some new materials for this new collection and the snake-effect leather gives this bag a luxury feel. The knots are also made in the handle and the soft vegetable tanned leather makes it comfortable to use. This bag comes with a removable shoulder strap in beige and snake-effect leather on the other side, so you can choose your colour for the day!
The snake bags have got a black suède lining. The other styles have got the exclusive Ruigrok van der Werven black and white printed lining.
Your bags are being produced in Italy. Why did you choose this place?
They know how to work with leather and they have a really good feeling for fashion. From generation to generation, they are working with leather and they know what they are doing. The advice they give me is very useful, as well as from a communication perspective. Also, I can keep an eye on the production process and it’s transparent.
